Uniting For A Common Cause – The Cause of Human Life
It is with great jubilation that the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care receives the news that finally both houses of the Philippine legislature have abolished the death penalty.
We congratulate ourselves as a people and nation. Divided in recent time by political differences, we now unite for a common cause – the cause of human life.
We rally behind the protection of precious, God-given life, which truly as Christians, we believe to be sacred, and being so, no one- not even the State- can take away. We no join the ranks of the ever growing number of countries that have chosen to abolish capital punishment from their legal system.
We congratulate and thank the legislators of both houses for realizing the barbaric stance of capital punishment which once has crucified Christ on Mount Calvary; the President of the Republic for her God-inspired wisdom to strongly endorse its abolition, realizing the futility and absurdity of the punishment as a deterrence to the commission of heinous crimes. Most of all, we thank those among us who have indefatigably rallied behind the Church and lobbied for its final death! Indeed, we don't have to kill people only to show that it is bad and criminal to kill!
