Technical Assessment:  • • Moral Assessment:  + CINEMA Rating:   Not for public viewing   Jake Wyler (Chris Evans), the all-American football star of John Hughes High and every female student's "dreamstud", makes a bet that he can turn the ugliest girl on campus, Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh), into a prom queen. To Janey's surprise and delight, Jake starts dating her. And as in classic fairy tales, bloom she does from an ugly duckling to an irresistible beauty. Will Jake win the bet and Janey's heart too? This is not just another teen movie—it must be among the worst teen movies ever conceived and produced. Barely hanging on a flimsy excuse of a storyline of high school life depicted in but two very brief scenes of class work, it boasts of a motley bunch of uncouth, irreverent, weird characters and their vulgar sex-obsessed dialogues and antics. It reeks of trying-hard comic situations, from offensive to obscene, ending in unfunny comedy. Outrageously gross is the nauseating toilet scene with the bowl's content exploding on an entire class. Wanting in moral values, not even the last few minutes of discovering true love can make up for its 1 ½ hour-litany of immorality and impropriety, of physical and verbal abuse. It screams of titillating scenarios like the girl masturbating with a vibrator for its opening scene, a father permitting his daughter to go on a date if the guy "will get her into his pants", a foreign student admitted for her sexual expertise and allowed to wear her daily "totally nude uniform", and an equally nude boy preparing to seduce his date by adding whipped-cream-sundae as bra and brief accessories, and many others. This is definitely a no-no for all viewers, not with all the don'ts in the book flaunted on screen under the guise of spoof. The young can be adversely influenced, while the more mature can only be disgustingly shocked by such abominable objectionable behavior, which is the accepted norm for this self-proclaimed unusual school. With the prevalence of loose morals and cries for freedom and license, heaven forbid that we should ever have such a school in our midst.   (Date reviewed: March 8, 2002)
