Miles Massey (George Clooney) and Marilyn Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones) are both sharks: he's
made millions from being a big-time divorce lawyer and she's a gold-digger. Their paths cross when Marilyn files for divorce from philandering husband Rex Rexroth (Edward
Herrmann) whose lawyer happens to be Miles. Poised to get her husband's fortune, she is armed with a video exposing Rex in flagrante delicto, yet the sleek Miles wins
the case. Curiously enough, when Marilyn is marrying an oil billionaire from Texas, she hires Miles to draft a Massey Pre-Nuptial Agreement which Miles has authored.
The Pre-Nup states that in case of divorce, Marilyn gets nothing whatsoever from the filthy rich Texan. Miles doesn't really have to wonder why the bewitching Marilyn wants
to marry a shrimp, but of course—it takes a shark to know another shark—she's using reverse psychology to get his money. By claiming she doesn't want his billions, he
gets to believe it's true love. Meanwhile, Miles who is undergoing a midlife crisis falls deeply in love with the cool but sensual Marilyn.
All the technical aspects of the film work to make the comedy Intolerable Cruelty
an unconditional success. The actors seem tailor-made for their roles, the music and sound effects are perfectly chosen and timed, cinematography is well-polished and the screenplay and the dialogue are matchless. The witty repartee between Marilyn and Miles is particularly engaging; and the chemistry between Clooney and Zeta-Jones is almost palpable it could make you wonder if Michael Douglas wouldn't be jealous watching the movie.
It's almost impossible to comment on the moral values enveloped in Intolerable Cruelty
without revealing its ending. The twists and runs the story takes the viewer through are giddying enough to render the story's ending a real surprise. Suffice it to say that the movie is entertaining, to say the least, and comes up with a very positive message for everyone. It's love versus love of money, and if the winner is not the former, CINEMA wouldn't be giving it the thumbs-up rating.
