After a near-fatal vehicular accident, unconscious Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up to find an eerily empty hospital and a completely deserted city. Scrounging for his needs, he meets Selena (Naomie Harris) and Mark (Noah Huntley) who inform him about the situation, which started 28 days ago.  Animal rights activists invade a Cambridge animal experimental laboratory and unwittingly release monkeys infected by a rabid virus turning them into vicious killers. When bitten and infected by the animals' blood, people become just as deadly, infecting and killing other people.  The city has been emptied by evacuation or death. They must now try to move on and survive.  A man, Frank (Brendan Gleeson) and his teenage daughter Hannah (Megan Burns) join up with them and the group agree to head for Manchester where there is an army unit safely barricaded against the infected people in the whole country.

The first element that impresses is the photography: an empty city, street scenes littered with windblown debris. The story is secondary to the repeated shots or scenes of infected people running after and biting the surviving remnant.  Not much is expected of the acting, given the intent of the horror-suspense film.  However the main cast is adequate, especially the lead, Naomie Harris as Selena and Cillian Murphy as Jim.  In some parts, the music helped to create suspense. In spite of certain inconsistencies, like infected people chasing after and biting the normal—why aren't they going after each other? 28 Days Later is still interesting enough to watch.

Selena from the start shows her leadership and survival instinct, capable of killing an infected person within 20 seconds before he becomes rabid and ready to bite and kill.  Her leadership is respected. Jim would have not survived if he had not met her. He is given his own opportunity to show his bravery and cunning in saving Selena and Hannah from those who want them for their plan of survival. Although becoming rabid, Frank is able to keep away from hurting his child Hannah because of his love for her. The group was in a critical situation where they had to decide and act quickly for their survival.
