At the behest of her bedridden mother, Aubrey Davis (Amber Tamblyn) flies to Tokyo to bring home
her hospital-confined sister Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar). In Japan she meets Eason (Ryo Ishibashi), a photo-journalist gathering information on Karen and who warns Aubrey
to be careful because something is seriously wrong with, and disturbing about her sister. Karen is being investigated for the death of her boyfriend in a house she burned
down. The only thing Aubrey learns from Karen is that she was trying to get rid of the evil entity (Grudge) in that house.
Then Karen plunges to her death. But the malevolent spirit survives and continues to spread its wickedness now beyond the original confines. An American girl studying in Tokyo goes home to Chicago, infected by the "grudge" to spread fear and destruction among family and neighbors. Aubrey herself does not escape the wrath of "the Grudge."
The "Grudge" is identified as Kayako (Takako Fugi) who appears to have been gravely wronged by her
mother and/or husband and killed. Her deep anger and resentment against them has brought her back, to sow her rage on others, starting with the original The Grudge
movie. Instead of a reasonably well-told story on the occult, with the expected suspenseful and fearful parts, The Grudge 2
concentrated on all the possible moments in the plot when the viewers could scream by putting in sudden blackouts, total silence, scary blurred figures walking towards the audience and other freaky gimmicks. It is difficult to get the proper sequence of what happened or when did what take place; the characters are also not easy to identify.
Some of the visuals could be really scary and disturbing; there are a few instances of horror for
some, and questionable language. The Grudge 2 indicates that up to this time, from The Grudge: 2004,
the malevolent Kayako has not been subdued. Thus the whole film, though not meant to be a serious feature, shows the range of evil deeds perpetrated by Kayako on persons who had no connections to her and could do nothing. In real life it is accepted that evil could be very strong, beyond the knowledge and understanding of man to deal with. Ultimately, however, it will be to the Lord God it has to bow. Our faith teaches us that no matter how strong, evil, whether dead or alive, can not be more powerful than good.
