"It
shall be a jubilee for you; each one of you is to return to his
family property" (Leviticus 25:10 NIV)
Beloved Brothers
and Sisters:
According to the
Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1 and 11) "There is a time for
everything ... He has made everything beautiful in its time."
We as Ecclesial
Communities also have our history according to the will of God.
The first
missionaries came to what is now Mindanao and Sulu in 1596. And on
September 8, 1597, the first Church built by the first Christian
Community formed in the village of Butuan was solemnly blest.
This signals the
start of the systematic evangelization throughout the length and
breadth of Mindanao and Sulu.
Since September 8
is the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary we kind of
entrusted this work to the protection of Mary. Since then, we have
grown under the mantle of her motherly love.
Jesuit and
Recollect Missionaries from Spain steered us in the faith which God
made to grow in us.
We were debilitated
during the Revolution.
In subsequent years
a few families remained faithful to keep alive the faith of the
Church which had become orphaned of her shepherds.
Slowly they
resurrected the Community of the Faithful who since the ensuing
years were being ministered to by new missionaries who also came
from other countries.
And slowly our
Church became strong again.
To acknowledge our
maturity as Church, the Holy Father in 1910 made us a Local Church
or Diocese. For the seat of the first Bishop, the Holy Father chose
the City of Zamboanga.
Other local
churches or dioceses were created: Cagayan de Oro in 1933, Surigao
in 1939, and after the Second World War the others followed. (Ozamis
was made a diocese in 1971.)
Today there are 21
local churches in Mindanao and Sulu.
These local
churches are enfleshed or incarnate in the various Basic Ecclesial
Communities in the cities and towns, in the barrios and villages,
successors all of the first Christian Community, the one of Butuan.
We are now
celebrating the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, a Year of Joy, a
Year of Grace.
In the Gospel our
Lord is pictured as anointed by the Spirit to "to proclaim the
year of the Lord's favor (Jubilee)."
According to the
Scriptures the Year of Jubilee is a time when consolation is offered
those who are suffering, freedom is given to captives, the good news
is preached to the poor, sins are forgiven, the earth is made to
rest, the people are to go back to their ancestral lands, and the
new time of salvation of God is inaugurated (cfr. Leviticus
25:8-17).
Accordingly we have
agreed that it is not enough to celebrate this year of grace as if
no lasting effect has been achieved.
Let us make of this
a time of grace, a time most of all of a deeper evangelization.
Hence, our priests
have arranged activities which will make this Jubilee meaningful.
These include the
remembering of our historical pasts as communities of the faithful
in our respective places.
Let us remember
those who have served us in our faith, those who have made us grow,
their teachings, the ways they employed.
This is needed for
us to understand and accept what we are as Church.
These also include
an envisioning of how we are to continue to live this great gift of
grace which is our faith.
So that we can also
leave this behind for those who will come after us.
To remember - To
envision: It is our hope that from this we can attain our vision of
the Kingdom.
Like a new
Pentecost in our respective Basic Ecclesial Communities, our young
shall see visions whilst our old people will dream dreams (cfr. Acts
2:17).
During this year of
Jubilee the Dioceses are undertaking various activities of
evangelization according to the creative group discernment among the
respective bishops, priests, and people.
Importance should
be given to the healing of the Body of Christ.
Through these
activities we can put into effect what the Scriptures have written
about the Jubilee: "For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for
you" (Leviticus 25).
We, your bishops
and your priests also need the graces of the Jubilee.
Hence we have
decided to make the distinctive sign of the Jubilee which is the
pilgrimage to the site where the First Christian Community in
Mindanao was created, namely Butuan City.
Through this we
hope to imbibe again the values and virtues which made our ancestors
strong in the faith.
In this way we also
symbolize our own coming home to the house of the Father in this
Great Jubilee.
One with you in the
journey of salvation,
Your Pastors
